INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Research

Our project investigates the effect of water hyacinth on the quality of the canal water at  Sungei Ulu Pandan. This was inspired by our research where we found out that water hyacinth was found to have certain water purifying properties. To quote, “Water hyacinth has shown promise in the removal of most common pollutants, toxic organic wastes, almost all the heavy metals and radioactive wastes.” (Trivedy, R. K. (2014).  By doing this background research on Phytoremediation which is a type of research very relevant to our project, we came up with our research questions which is, What is the effect of water hyacinths on the water quality along Sungei Ulu Pandan?(Our research question also happens to be related to our independent variable, the water hyacinth) and our hypotheses, the water in the tank with the water hyacinths would be purified.

1.2 Research Question/Aim

What is the effect of water hyacinths on the water quality along Sungei Ulu Pandan?

1.3 Hypothesis

The water in the tank with the water hyacinth would be purified.

Independent variable

  • The water hyacinth

Dependent variable

  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Bacteria
  • Sediment

Controlled variables

  • The place where we collect the water
  • The volume of water used for analysing
  • When the water is collected
  • Time between collection and analysing
  • Tools used to analyse the water
  • The species of water hyacinth
  • Size of tank/volume of water
  • Type of aerator
  • Position of aerator
